Last night, a jaunt around Waikiki became a priority when the downward spiral of despondency was imminent. There was some apprehension because of the disdain for tourists. However, the presence of those tourists was actually therapeutic.
A quick bus ride was taken to Waikiki Beach near Fudgepacker Park. From there, the journey commenced. Of course, the area is all too familiar. There were quite a few people out and about, which was surprising. Tourists were walking up and down the main promenade.
Waikiki Beach Pavilion |
The pavilions, which were the backdrop for Lou’s Kabuki Theater in the old “blog,” are now fenced off. In the days of old, during the tenure at the detestable Waikiki condotel, the pavilions were a lively spot. Nearly all of them were taken over by the homeless, and there was endless entertainment. Those were the days!
Homeless in Waikiki |
The homeless are still a big presence in Waikiki. At night, they camp in the grassy areas above the beach. What exactly do the tourists think when they observe this?
The liveliest spot on the main promenade is between the International Marketplace and the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center directly across. The street entertainers have returned, so there a few large crowds. In fact, the scene looked exactly like that days before the “super-duper corona” plan-demic. Most of the stores were open, too. And, there were nice chairs available to sit in!
The Real International Marketplace |
The old time vendors, the ones that were in the original International Marketplace, are now situated in an alley adjacent to the latter. The place was bustling with activity.
The tourists appeared to be having a good time. About half of them were wearing face masks full time. However, the lively atmosphere, the cheerful ambience, is in stark contrast to the other areas of town where fear of “super-duper corona” and the “unvaccinated” have created a funerary black hole. All in all, the outing was way better than sitting in the mausoleum in the “old folks home.”
Addendum: The State eviction moratorium apparently ended last week concurrent with the overturn by the Supreme Court of the nationwide eviction moratorium.
Update: Health “officials” have indicated that the “Mu variant” is now in 49 states of empire including Hawai’i. Let the fearmongering begin!
